ANNETT TAKES THE REINS

The North East Bushrangers’ Men’s program have secured the coaching expertise of Hayden Annett as they prepare for the 2021 Big V Season. Annett will take over the reins as Head Coach, relieving David de Koeyer who stepped down, citing other commitments. We are excited to secure someone of Annett’s calibre who will bring in a fresh approach for the Men’s program.

Annett has a strong background in basketball, hailing from Portland (Vic) and more recently Wallan, where he has been the Coaching Director 2017-19. Annett was an integral member of the University of Charleston’s Conference Championship in 2014, before heading back to Australia. He is a previous Big V player with more than 100 games under his belt and has picked up a number of playing awards at senior level to go with a SEABL Championship in 2015. Since turning his hand to the coaching role, Annett found success in 2016 where he coached U18 Boys to a Div 1 Championship title.

Annett currently holds a Vic Country AC position and is the Basketball Victoria Hub Lead Coach for the Shepparton Hub. We believe Annett’s all-round knowledge across multiple State, National and International platforms, coupled with his past playing experience, will provide the Bushies’ with an exciting edge.

Tryouts are currently in progress for the Men's team, and is giving Annett an insight to the talent we have up here in the northeast. Stay tuned to our socials for dates/venues of Tryouts, and to your local media over the coming days for an in-depth look at Hayden Annett!

Bring on the 2021 Big V season, and let’s watch closely to see how Annett provides the lift our Bushrangers’ Men need.

BENALLA ENSIGN: October 1 2020

Benalla Breakers women’s coach Tony Long lives and breathes basketball.
So, there is little surprise that Long, who holds dual roles at Benalla as its coaching director and women’s CBL coach, has added another role to his already long-established coaching resume.
Earlier this month, Long was appointed head coach of the North East Bushrangers Division 2 Women’s team for its 2021 season.
Long takes over the reins from departing head coach Jacqui Henry, who stepped away from the program during the off-season.
An assistant coach to Henry prior to taking on the top job, Long said he hoped to continue Henry’s work in building up the program.
“We may restructure how the team is seen, but I’ll be carrying some of the traits Jacqui developed as coach, and then find my own niche going forward,” Long said.
A key part of Long’s plans is recruiting a senior leadership group to carry the program forward.
“I’m just the conduit for the players. If they want to want to play and be a part of this group, I’m just here to assist and complement them,” Long said.
“These are adults, so the structure isn’t so much on development as it is on the people and what they want to achieve.”
Another crucial part to the program’s growth will be tapping into the wealth of talent in the north east.
“We have a lot of young players who come through, become great players and are going out the top end,” he said.
“Our focus is to tie it all together, from our junior clubs up and forge that pathway.”

North East Bushrangers men’s program will also have a new face at the helm next season, with Wodonga’s David de Koeyer announced as the team's new head coach.
He also steps up from an assistant coach's role, replacing former head coach Emma Henry.
Long said de Koeyer was a standout individual who would bring a lot of experience to the role.
“He’s a great player in his own right, and has been a long-term fixture in the program,” Long said.

2021 COACHES ANNOUNCED

9/16/2020

Picture
Looking ahead to the 2021 Big V season, the NE Bushrangers have got the early jump on most clubs and named our Head Coaches for the 2021-22 seasons. David de Koeyer and Tony Long have both been involved with the NEB program for a number of years and have a wealth of basketball knowledge between them. It is hoped this familiarity will combine with their individual strengths to further develop and promote our program over the next two seasons..
We wish both coaches all the best.

David De Koeyer – Div 2 Men
We believe David brings a special personality to the role of Head Coach. He is popular and well respected throughout the Northeast and across Southern NSW. These traits have assisted NEB with maintaining our core playing group and recruiting a few surprises to the league in recent years. The plan David brings is focussed on the move into Division 1. His strategy is centred around a mix of recruiting senior local players to add to the current leadership group along with the promotion of some of the young guns from our VJBL program. We are excited about David’s plan and are confident he has the capacity to achieve these goals.

David brings a wealth of basketball experience to the program. He played for Wodonga as a junior before joining Northeast Bushrangers as a player in Big V in 2015. Over the past few seasons, he has held the Assistant Coaching role at Bushrangers providing him with a great grasp of the game from a coaching perspective. David believes there is enough local basketball talent in the northeast for Bushrangers to be a real threat for silverware in 2021. He is beginning the work to source an Assistant Coach and the recruitment of the local talent as this announcement is made public.

Tony Long – Div 2 Women
Tony brings a basketball resume to the Northeast that covers five decades.  His experience as a player and coach have seen him win State titles in both roles, as well as multiple championships. He is passionate about all things basketball – in short he eats, drinks and breathes basketball! His experience and extensive basketball knowledge is testament to the on-court results he has achieved in the past. Tony was a driving force in establishing our VJBL program and his dedication to the development of young athletes in the north east is commendable.
Tony has strong contacts across the NEB program and has identified key future stars to suit-up in the senior squad in 2021. He is focussed on recruiting a senior leadership group as the core to drive his team, to encourage and build a winning culture. This group, coupled with a good mix of youth, should result in an exciting future for the Bushranger women’s program. His plan to allow the leadership group to take ownership of the program under his guidance, was a key factor in Tony winning the role. We are confident the plan is sound, and its implementation will yield the results the Club is looking for in 2021.

Miraflores boosts 2020 Prospects

The NE Bushrangers would like to announce the signing of Eric Miraflores to our Men’s 2020 line-up.
Eric is well known around the Big V and even went for the PBA Draft in 2015, returning to Melbourne to play in Victoria's State League. Eric’s experience and proven ability will provide the depth and experience the Bushrangers need for the 2020 season. He’s won a Big V championship in 2012, been awarded League All Star status, yet still finds the urge to develop his game to the highest level. He will use his own motivation to help develop our young playing group across the season.
Eric is coming off a 3rd Championship season for the MLV Chargers in the MBL, where he was recently awarded the Liga Australia MBL Filipino-Australian Baller of the Decade Award – quite an accolade!
We look forward to watching Eric turn on his magic around the basket with his ability to pile on quick points, while relishing in creating back-court havoc through defensive pressure. Welcome Eric!

2020 D2W sign American, Vashti Nwagbaraocha

The North East Bushrangers Basketball Club are excited to announce the signing of Vashti Nwagbaraocha to their Div 2 Women’s team for the 2020 Big V season. Vashti’s athleticism will be a boost to the Bushies, offering unlimited offensive opportunities as her versatility affords her game to extend beyond the paint, while still being a stable presence around the boards.

Vashti completed her studies at William Penn University (NAIA Div 1) from 2015-19 in Oskaloosa, Iowa with some impressive stats in her final year including averages of: 18.45ppg , FG 227/384 @ 59.1%, FT 155/188 @ 82.4%,  8.94rpg, 1.76apg, 1.73spg and 1.42bpg; and comes to us off a successful season in South America where she played for Club Deportivio Villa Imperial.

Head Coach, Jacqui Henry will be looking for Vashti to utilise her wealth of knowledge, and experience of winning a conference championship, to provide strong leadership to our young playing group while further supporting our VJBL programs.

She is a hustle player who is not afraid of contact or throwing herself on the floor to gain possession. Her defensive pressure contributes to the many turnovers attributed to her team’s stats - taking charges, blocking shots and scooping up rebounds, while taking care of the finer points of ‘D’ in boxing out and help-side defense.

Coach Henry said, “We are excited to have Vashti join the Bushrangers squad and provide more depth to the group. She will be a much-needed strong presence inside the key both offensively and defensively. She brings with her a lot of experience and can stretch the floor and play from the perimeter. We look forward to her working with some of our young and developing players to help them continue to take their game to the next level. “

Upon signing, Vashti said, “I am very excited to be a part of this team in this new place! I believe in the coach’s vision for the team and I am excited for all the new experiences I will have!”  Vashti is also really looking forward to the warmer weather out here, as it is super cold in Wisconsin right now.

Her hard word, dedication and passion for the game, makes her a a great asset for our team.  This extends off court as well, as Vashti loves the idea of ‘developing the kids and letting their improvement be fun’. Junior player development in North East Victoria is a priority for the Club and Vashti is excited at the prospect of imparting her knowledge, and in the process, adding value to a new generation of basketballers.

North East Bushrangers would like to extend their appreciation to Ross Smith and Alex from 01 Sports Management for their professionalism in sourcing and securing Vashti Nwagbaraocha for the Club in 2020.

Vashti is due to arrive in Wangaratta late in February.

OREGON’S JARMAL SIGNS WITH NORTH EAST BUSHRANGERS

The North East Bushrangers Basketball Club are excited to announce the signing of Jarmal Reid as our Division 2 Men’s import for the 2020 season. Jarmal is product of Oregon State University and the PAC12 Conference. He is an athletic and agile player with limitless versatility which will strengthen our inside outside options. At 26 years of age and being a lofty 202cm and 109 kgs, he will be a formidable force to guard inside the paint and an asset on the boards. We will be looking for Jarmal to utilise his wealth of NCAA D1 experience, and extensive basketball coaching credentials to provide strong leadership to our young playing group while assisting with our VJBL program as well.

NBL legend, Al Green coached Jarmal in the South Australian Premier League when he played a season with ‘Souths’. Al could not speak highly enough of Jarmal commenting ‘Jarmal is great on and off the court, quite simply, he is an outstanding human being’.

Bushrangers’ Head Coach, Emma Henry said, “We are excited to have Jarmal join the Bushies squad and provide more depth to the group. He will be a much-needed strong presence inside the key both offensively and defensively. He brings with him a lot of experience and can stretch the floor and play from the perimeter. We look forward to him working with some of our young and developing players to help them continue to take their game to the next level. “

Jarmal said upon signing with NEB - “I’m excited and fortunate for the opportunity at North East and can’t wait to get out there and get the show started”.

Jarmal will be an asset off the court too! Jarmal loves the idea of ‘developing the kids and letting their improvement be fun’. Junior player development in North East Victoria is a priority for the Club. Jarmal is excited at the prospect of imparting his knowledge and in the process add value to a new generation of basketballers.

North East Bushrangers would like to extend their appreciation to Michael Yates of ‘Aussie Player Agency’ for his professionalism around sourcing and securing Jarmal Reid for the Club in 2020.
